10/2009 ICSM 3rd XI - Eastbourne
After a long trip to Eastbourne, we arrived at ‘The Saffrons’ ready to face Brighton Women’s 3rd team. Despite our best efforts, Brighton were just too strong for us and took the lead early on. Even though we were behind throughout, everybody kept their heads up and fought until the end. The final score of 0-10 didn’t do justice to the massive effort that everybody put in, especially considering we had a number of girls playing in their first match ever. Special mentions go to Tamsin Cargill for doing a fantastic job in midfield, and Katy Saide for keeping out many a goal in defence. However, this week our most valuable player was Jess Mistry, without whom we would have suffered a much bigger loss. The pants award goes to Murooj Abdi for getting injured whilst giving away a penalty flick (saved by yours truly)! Thank you so much to everybody for making it such a fun game to play in. You were all fantastic! Here’s to the future!
Team: Theresa Wright (C), Rajvi Shah (VC), Cathy Geldart, Tamsin Cargill, Poppy Laxton, Amy Pennefather, Jess Mistry, Katy Saide, Murooj Abdi, Chinenye Oparah
25/02/09 ICSM 2ND XI vs. IMPERIAL COLLEGE 2s - VARSITY!!
This was the match we had been looking forward to all season, and what all our hard work had been focused towards. Having beat IC 7-0 earlier in the season we were feeling optimistic. I can truly say that I have never seen my team try as hard as they did on 25th Feb. It was a hard first half but we were dominating. IC made a few attempts to break through but due to our strong defence they didn't succeed. All our hard effort in the first half paid off when we had a short corner awarded to us. Rhian and Nicole used the "tick tock" set play which ended with a goal by Rhian. IC then again came back stronger, and towards the end of the first half everyone was feeling the fight. Being one up we were feeling positive in the 2nd half, but we knew we had to put in another great effort. Unfortunately we lost pace, and things were not moving in the right direction. Both right and left halves had suffered injuries in the first half, so we had to field a different team for the second. While adjusting to the new team, IC came back with two consecutive goals, within five minutes of each other. At the thought of losing we got our spring back into our step. There was ten minutes left and we gave one last push. Fresher Charlotte then equalised with a goal from a rebound. We were ecstatic and wanted just one more. Everyone played beautifully and we were passing around the IC half. With two minutes remaining Charlotte had another shot on goal, which went wide. Final score 2-2. I would like to say thanks to all those who played, you put in such a great effort and I am so pleased with you all. Also I would like to thank all those medics who came and supported us, you really spurred us on.
18/01/09 ICSM 2nd XI vs Royal Holloway 3's (ULU Knockout cup)
It being rather unusual to have a game on Sunday, it was always going to be difficult. Finally we pulled together 10 people (thanks to Steph and Sarah who came up from the 3's). We navigated our way to Staines (West Side), and thought we were lost so took a trip to Subbers, only to find the pitch was 2 minutes around the corner. We were greeted by the world's worst pitch. Think mud, algae, bog etc. After some deliberation we decided to play on it, as we had travelled miles. It was a hard first half, we just could not get the ball in the goal and Lozza just could not hit to save her life. One of our finest assets "the press" was working beautifully though. After a break and a few words by moi we came back stronger than ever. There was beautiful play by Rhian and "Naked Char" up front, and Kav in centre back was making some lovely switches. Naked gave us our first goal, other goals came from Nia and 2 from Rhian. With my favourite being a tremendous hit from Rhi in a short (the Holloway would be proud). Overall score 4- 0. MVP = Rhian and PANTS = Charlotte for being a) drunk and b) telling us about her naked escapades the night before.
10/12/08 ICSM 1st XI vs. UCL 1s
On a very cold day, we had our first ULU match of the season, which also came with a 2-1 loss. Credit needs to go to our defence, particularly to Sarah Quinn for keeping the score-line as low as it was, which admittedly didn't reflect the game. Some brilliant saves, and even a dive!!! from Annie were also commendable. Our goal in the last five minutes was well deserved, with a beautiful deflection up into the goal by Sophia from Jude's strike. MVP went to Sabrina for some brilliant defensive and attacking play. Unfortunately Pants also went to Sabrina for her over-aggressiveness in the game!!!!
29/11/08 ICSM Saturday XI vs. West Hampstead 5s
Having beaten west hampstead 4s this appeared like it was going to be an easy match on a bloody freezing day. The opposition thought otherwise though and started reallly strong with some nice passing. It took us a few minutes but we eventually scored and then the goals came flooding in with an eventual score of 8-0, 6 from Jessie, 1 from Judith and a lovely tap in at the post by Wriggles. Pants is uncontested this week going to Roz for getting a green card for 'stick tackling!!!' MVP was joint this week going to Rhian and Wriggles for some brilliant play on the right attacking side - well done guys!
26/11/08 ICSM 1st XI vs. Queen Mary 1s
Playing a team with one of their players wearing ugg boots wasn't ever going to be too much of a challenge for us, and we came out with a 10-1 victory. They had some good forwards though so credit needs also to be given to our defense for some good work. MVP was joint this week with the old and the young Jessie and Roz being awarded. And Pants went to Jessie for abandoning us to go on elective and for taking out the goalie and laughing - harsh!
26/11/08 ICSM Ladies 2nd XI vs. RUMS 2s
For the second week in a row we were playing RUMS, and after the previous draw we knew we had to pull our fingers out for this one. We had some brilliant play, names were being put on balls every thing was going perfectly. To top it off Charlotte had a goal. The ball never left their half, this is a game I love to see, and shortly after Charlotte got another one. In the second half they started to hit back, but they couldn't get past the big D(efence). Lozza even had a little run down the pitch. Final score 2 - nil. Post match talk with the ref; he suggested we were "lippy" so well done girls you're doing me proud! MVP goes to Charlotte and pants was to me, Lauren, for feral activities preceding the game.
19/11/08 ICSM 1st XI vs. Reading 2s
The second round of the BUCS knockout cup proved a little trickier than the previous 12-1 win. It wasn't too much for us and we came out with a 6-2 victory over Reading. MVP went to Fresher Roz for some hardworking defending and pants was pretty evenly spread out but most votes went to Jessie for going on elective very soon.
15/11/08 ICSM Saturday XI vs. Teddington 4s aka 'The Children'
WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our biggest rivals for the last few seasons were defeated this weekend despite a controversial goal from them. We started off brilliantly with a goal from Wriggles who crept in to guide the ball inside the post. Teddington then fought back to get a goal. We however went back in the lead with Judith slotting in a pull back from Jessie after some beautiful twisting and turning. Teddington came back with a scrappy goal to equalise yet again. Alison Kent proved her finishing skills to make it 3-2. Then the controversy happened - did the ball cross line?!! - well their umpire gave a goal. Riled up by the decision we went all out and with some aggressive attacking play got a short corner. Jude managed to slot the ball between the goal keepers legs to make it a win for us - what a relief when the final whistle blew!!! Well done to all - particular congratulations go to Annie for some excellent saves in goal! Pants went to Wriggles for her numerous misdemeanours on Wednesday night, for which she will be made to pay this Wednesday!!!!!!!
12/11/08 ICSM Ladies 1st XI vs. King's College London 1s
Nothing much needs to be said about this match other than we had a number of goals scored against us (perhaps 7!). King's had some great finishes as we struggled to settle into the game. Our second half was much improved with far more determination and it paid off with a solitary goal by Alison Kent after some fine passes from the forwards. This resulted in a 7-1 loss, but need not fear, we will do better next week! MVP went to fresher Ali for some amazing saves and Pants to our other fresher Roz for her Ghandi wife beater playing shirt!!
12/11/08 ICSM Ladies 2nd XI vs. Imperial College 2s
This Wednesday saw us play our arch enemy IC! The match started off with us playing mostly in defence, however our luck started to change when in the first 10 minutes we scored our first goal. Then another 2 goals came quite quickly, even though our play was not that strong. One of the most memorable moments was Wriggles side line ball that went 2 feet off the pitch ... this earnt her 'pants'. After a team talk at half time, we started to put names on balls, and look for the pass. Our play vastly improved and I hardly touched the ball at all, let alone Suzie the goalie who had 1 save all match! 4 more goals arrived in the second half. Congratulations to Wriggles who got a hat-trick, pants and MVP, Laura who had 2 goals, and Charlotte Lees and Panniker who each scored a goal. IC definitely ain't looking mighty any more ..
8/11/08 vs. Staines Ladies 4s
This week provided quite a challenge for us and it was evident from the very beginning of the game. Staines began on top form, eager to put on a good show. A calamity of errors in the D ended up with a shot being deflected high and in the goal, not a good start for us. The first half was a struggle for us, despite having a lot of possession we couldn't finish our chances, with the opposition goalkeeper being very strong. Staines put in a second and we were 2-0 down. Post angry team talk by captain!! the second half was a much better show. Lauren Chalmers scored after a lovely slip by Sabrina Black. After numerous chances, Jessie Payne put in the equaliser, but Staines came back with another. A tense last few minutes proceeded, but after our efforts in the second half we deservedly didn't lose with a goal with about 2 minutes left to play by Alison, ending the match 3-3, what a relief that was!!! Pants went to Jessie for having a red eye and squirting water into it several times and MVP to Caroline for some brilliant saves in goal. Bring on Teddington next week!
5/11/08 ICSM Ladies 1s vs. King's College London Medical School 2s
This week produced a well fought match that we were determined not to lose. Victory came to us with 4 goals to 0, with goals from Jessie Payne, Alison Kent and Sophia Paget. Due to lack of organisation it was an executive decision pants and MVP. Our best player award was given to Sonja, for some excellent play in the midfield. The pants evolved around the story of the disappearing first team bag of balls (which were missing for 2 weeks). It was given jointly to Sabrina for accusing her captain of losing them, and Sophia for having them all along in the boot of her car under some bags. What a terrible twosome!!
29/10/08 ICSM Ladies 1st XI vs. Queen Mary's 1st XI
We made up for last week's lack of being able to play together as a team, with an amazing match against QM. We travelled to the deepest depths of a dark park in East London but it was worth it. The goals kept on going in and we ended with a marvellous score-line of 12-2!!! With 7 of those goals, our MVP was Jessie Payne. The Holloway would have been proud at our attempts at aerial balls at goal, with Jessie almost taking out their entire defence with a high wack faster than the speed of sound. Equally brilliant play at defence, particularly by Sonja Bland in her debut for the 1s. Pants goes to myself (Judith) for a ridiculous attempt, swing and miss of the ball at the top of the D, despite having all the time in the world!! Lets continue the good form!
18/10/08 ICSM Saturday XI vs. West Hampstead 4s
After arriving in a kafuffle with only 5 minutes to be on the pitch, the first half of this game was far from the best hockey you've ever seen the ICSM Saturday Side play! By half time it was 1-1 with a beautiful drag flick by Sabrina (that the Holloway would be proud of!!), but the scoreline was worrying. The second half showed much improvement, once we realised the goal keeper was too good for our straight strikes. After a bit of heads up hockey and passing in the D, 4 more goals went in, another by Sabrina, 2 by Alison and a final one by Sophia. MVP definitely goes to Sabrina for the second time this week for some amazing defensive and attacking play that we should all learn from. Pants goes to AA route planner for giving us rubbish directions, and our goalkeeper Caroline for being late so only being able to play half a match.
16/10/08 ICSM Ladies 1st XI vs. University of Essex 1s
Our first game of the BUCS season did not quite have the start that we hoped for, resulting in a 1-1 draw. With some impressive individual play, we didn't quite connect well as team to get the success we deserved. Most of the play was attacking, and it was only Sabrina Black who finished a fine individual goal, and deservedly received MVP. Both freshers Roz and Beth played brilliantly and appear to be a great addition to the 1st team for the season to come. Pants goes to Annie for having crotchless goalkeeping shorts which allowed her to parade her crotch guard, classy lady!
16/10/08 ICSM Ladies 2nd XI vs Royal Holloway 2s
The first game of the season was always going to be hard, but despite the rain and not having played in a long time we played some brilliant hockey. Unfortunately we lost 5-0. MVP goes to fresher Charlotte for some great play in right half and Pants goes to Charlie Oliver who after arriving late ran onto the pitch as the "12th player".
11/10/08 ICSM Saturday XI vs. Winchmore Hill and Enfield 2nd XI
Well done to all for another win, this time 5-1 over Winchmore Hill and Enfield 2s. A slightly harder team than last week provided us with a greater challenge that we swiftly overcame. Goals came from Jessie, Sabrina, Jude and our MVP for the match with a fine finish, Rachel Panniker. With a match full of injuries, Pants shall be shared between Jude (the better Lauren!!) with an amazing salmon dive at the ground (please give her sympathy, she ended up in A&E) and Lauren Ewington who did a superman fling across the pitch - and she has the grazes to prove it. Disaster leaving both 1st and 2nd team captains injured for Wednesdays matches, but we'll battle on!!
04/10/08 ICSM Saturday XI vs. NPL Ladies 1st XI
So the 2008-09 season has begun with a win! Well done to all who played on Saturday for a successful 7-2 win over NPL Ladies 1s in our newly promoted division. Goals came from Sabrina Black, Alison Kent, Sophia Paget and a fine hatrick by Jessie Payne. Congratulations should go to our Most Valuable Player of the match - Alison Kent for some superb forward play, but credit also needs to go to our backs for some brilliant defensive work, in particular Kim Shuttlewood in goal. Our Pants award shall go to Rachel Panniker for an outstanding screeching noise that no-one would think a human could make! Others may argue that it should be given to me for missing a wide open goal, I would however disagree!
